Principal's Welcome

Nau mai, haere mai.

Okoia School is a full state primary school that caters for students in Years 1 to 8. We are situated 8kms east of Whanganui. The school is set on 5 beautiful acres of trees, gardens, playing fields and pasture.

We have 3 classes where we keep our low teacher-student ratio, with an average of 1:18. This allows the opportunity to provide more one on one teacher time and more personalised teaching and learning.

At Okoia School we endeavour to provide a safe, exciting learning environment for our students where their academic, emotional, social and physical needs are met. Our roll is usually around 50—60 students.

We pride ourselves on setting high standards for learning and behaviour, and achieving excellent results in both areas.

We have an ‘open door’ policy and encourage family participation in all school activities.

We are a country school, with small class sizes that cater for individual learning needs. Our school values are Responsibility, Relationships, Respect and Resilience. These values are at the heart of ‘who we are and how we be’ at Okoia School. We provide an environment where all students have opportunities to be successful and gain the necessary skills that will support them in their learning journey.

We offer a balanced curriculum delivered through the 3 R’s (Reading, Writing and Maths).

In the months before your child starts school you are welcome to come in and join the class programme for the morning. We encourage at least 4 morning visits. This gives you and your child the opportunity to build a relationship with both the teacher and their classmates. This is an important process allowing the transition to school to be a positive experience. It is also a great opportunity for you to meet the staff here at Okoia School and gain an understanding of how the classroom and school operate.

Our staff are warm and approachable, and we strive to build positive relationships with our students, their families and whānau.

Okoia School welcomes all new enrolments. Please feel free to contact us for further information.

Ngā mihi,

Maria Johnstone | Principal
